After the Proposal Grand Opening!

Jean McGrury at After the Proposal Wedding Consultants has become a good friend, and I’m REALLY looking forward to our first wedding working together on April 9th!

Jean had her Grand Opening Open House last night at her new office in D’Iberville, she really put on a nice spread! The one question I heard throughout the night, “Jean, WHO catered this!?” Jean did. Yep, she does it all!

Gobblepalooza benefiting Feed My Sheep

The first annual Gobblepalooza concert in Downtown Gulfport was a hit!  It was so much fun.  I kept thinking “man, there should be more of these!”  This is one of the first concerts I’ve professionally photographed and it was an eye opening experience.  I really enjoyed capturing the performers while on stage.  I know this isn’t a wedding, or even closely wedding related, BUT I felt when the organizers asked me to help out I had to do it.  All of the proceeds went to a local food bank, Feed My Sheep.  We all know the importance of having food on the table.  After Hurricane Katrina, most all South Mississippians (and all Gulf Coast residents for that matter) really know what it’s like not to know where your next meal is coming from so it was nice to help out.

The bands that played were:

Rochelle Harper Band, Myles Sharp & Handsboro Slim, Cut Bait, Dirty Play, The Grand Magnolias,   AND Cowboy Mouth

I’ve loved Cowboy Mouth since I was in middle school, they play all over, but my new favorite is The Grand Magnolias.  Such a cool group and very fun music!

The Battle Begins

On October 19, 2010 my two year old nephew, Evan, was diagnosed with leukemia.  My brother, Adam, and his wife, Mary, have been at the Children’s Hospital in New Orleans since Monday of last week.  It’s a terrible diagnosis, but with it being Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia we are extremely optimistic.  I’ve setup a new site just for Evan

www.ALLaboutevan.com

It’s going to be a long road, the doctors say nearly three years, but he’s an extremely tough little kid!

Adam is a chiropractor in downtown Gulfport, MS owns his own practice Healing Hands Chiropractic www.healinghandsms.com which I will be helping staff while he’s with Evan.  Please support him if you need any thing chiropractic!

Here are a few shots of the little guy.

Bald and Beautiful

These women are truly inspiring!  While photoing my last beautiful bride, Beth, at her hair salon I had the privilege to meet JoAn Nicely.  JoAn is fairly well known in the community and is actually a friend of my Mom’s!  A few years back JoAn started the Pink Heart Funds to provide wigs and breast prosthesis for cancer patients.  I was completely amazed and humbled when she asked me to be her photographer at the Bald and Beautiful fundraiser!  The event was a luncheon held at the Beau Rivage Resort and Casino to raise the funds necessary to provide wigs free of charge to those in need.  Going into the event I knew it was probably going to be somewhat emotional, but I was NOT ready for everything I saw and heard that day.  The energy that filled the room from strength and will to survive was amazing.  I was particularly struck when JoAn asked all the survivors in the audience to stand; it was about 25%.  I can usually hold it together pretty well behind the camera, but I remember at one point barely being able to click the shutter it was so emotional!  Special thanks to Petula Skeete, Robin Roberts personal hair dresser, for coming down!  She is such a wonderful person!

If you’ve ever considered donating your hair to Locks for Love, consider this local non-profit based in Long Beach, MS.  Over the next few years, I’ll be working on growing my own mop long enough to donate to the wonderful people at Pink Heart Funds!

A Local Eco-minded Photographer’s Perspective on the Gulf Oil Spill

Here are a few of my images from the Deepwater Horizon Incident.  I’ve been shooting often since the oil rig exploded April 20, 2010.  My main focus was from the perspective of local “lover of the ocean”.  I’ve grown up sailing on these Mississippi waters, vacationing to the Barrier Islands every weekend with my Dad since I could walk.  (Maybe before then?)  This catastrophe has hit very hard and close to home.  Hurricane Katrina was a mere five years ago and the Coast was beginning to take shape again (besides the still unpaved road we live on, that’s another story!).   Water based businesses, like our dear friends of Da Beach House, had great hope that 2010 was they’re year to shine.  They have yet to sell a kayak since the rig exploded.  Personally the hardest blow was when the Long Beach Harbor closed the entrance/exit to the harbor where I, JUST weeks before the rig exploded, moored my small sailboat.  This was going to be a summer of fun on the water teaching Liz to sail so she could feel confident handling a larger boat.  Those are still nothing but dreams that I’m reminded of every time I jog to the harbor and look at the orange and yellow booms blocking the entrance.

These images were taken at different times.  Some were shot with Below the Surface, a great group of friends based in San Diego.  They were down with they’re non-profit to lend a helping hand in the first few weeks of the catastrophe.  Some were taken more recently when I hosted and guided Gulf Alert 2010, an initiative of Project Save Our Surf and the Eco-Warrior Project with the aim of inspiring direct action on environmental conservation and renewal.  Here’s a link to a quick video posted by the amazing Mary Osborne showing, through her eyes, the Gulf Crisis and many other stories she’s written about.   The Gulf Alert 2010 consisted of Chuck Patterson, James Pribram, Mary Osborne, Tobias Mehler, Shelly Strazis and myself!

I will be continually working with small non-profits so expect to see many more photos coming up!
